Customs officers on Wednesday said their sniffer dogs will become better at detecting various types of contraband after going through courses at a newly expanded training centre.
The facility by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge has added an outdoor training area that can be used to simulate a range of realistic scenarios.
Shawn Tsang, from the Tactical and Puppies Development Team, said it's becoming a leading training hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
“The Regional Dog Training Centre (RDTC) actually strengthens Hong Kong Customs’ collaboration with neighbouring customs administrations, and also affirms our international standing in canine training,” he said.
“Regularly, we will offer training courses, workshops, or seminars to the RTDC members in order to foster the exchange of canine knowledge and experience.”
Chief Secretary Eric Chan gave the opening speech at an inauguration ceremony for the centre.
“With the WCO [World Customs Organization] Regional Dog Training Centre, Hong Kong Customs will take up greater responsibility for canine enforcement and professionalism in the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.
“Taking on a leading role in the sharing of good practices and experiences, and in expanding collaboration with our regional counterparts, we look forward to safeguarding security in Hong Kong and throughout the region.”
The customs department was also hosting the WCO's Global Canine Forum for the first time, from March 5-7.
