National People's Congress delegate and sports sector lawmaker Kenneth Fok said on Wednesday he hopes China would host the Women's World Cup football tournament in 2031.

Fok, who's in Beijing attending the "two sessions", said he hopes Hong Kong and Macau could host some of the matches.

FIFA is expected to decide on a host nation in 2025.

Fok also said Hong Kong needs a larger market and more venues for sports events.

“Hong Kong will have the Kai Tak Sports Park, and some new venues will be set up. But if we need to hold large-scale events, having the Greater Bay Area or the country’s support is important,” he said.

Fok, who also heads the Arts Development Council, added that the Basic Law safeguards freedom of artistic expression. He said there’s no need to worry about the development of arts and culture in Hong Kong.
