Chief Secretary Eric Chan on Monday said the government is committed to making Hong Kong a global art and cultural hub.

Speaking at the opening of this year's FILMART – a film and entertainment trade show organised by the Trade Development Council – Chan said the authorities will continue to offer support to creative industries.

“Our current-term government is all the more determined to strengthen Hong Kong's positioning as the East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange and as Asia's events capital. The entertainment industry is surely among our closest partners in achieving this goal,” he said.

"We will also inject about US$550 million into the Film Development Fund and the Create Smart Initiative to boost the development of our cultural and creative industries."

Culture Secretary Kevin Yeung, meanwhile, said Hong Kong will strengthen cooperation with the mainland to promote Chinese culture to the world.

Yeung noted that Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group (ADME Group) will launch a revitalisation programme dedicated to Hong Kong's creative industries.

The programme will involve an investment of HK$5 billion over the next five years, focusing on film production, TV series production, talent development and more.

"We eagerly hope that ADME Group will work more closely with the film and TV industry of Hong Kong to develop new modes of cooperation and explore business areas, to nurture new talent, and to create rich and diversified content for film and TV, which will bring the development of our film and TV entertainment industry to the next level," he said.

Yeung said he hopes Hong Kong’s film and entertainment industry will reach new heights globally.
