The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) officially opened its five-storey animal protection centre in Tsing Yi on Tuesday, housing a 16,500 square foot animal hospital, the largest in the New Territories.

Occupying the entire fourth floor of the building, the hospital features a variety of veterinary services. There are consulting rooms, operating theatres, and even designated rooms for dental surgery, ultrasonography and radiology.

Joanna Eades, chairwoman of SPCA’s Executive Committee said the hospital will provide 24-hour services once it starts operating later this year.

“This new facility comes at exactly the right time for Hong Kong. It houses the largest state-of-the-art animal hospital in the New Territories and will be the only 24/7 facility in the Kwai Tsing area,” she said.

“The centre comes with comprehensive retail and pet services, a pet friendly rooftop together with other unique services like animal physiotherapy.”

There are also isolation wards for cats and dogs with contagious diseases, as well as temperature-controlled areas designed for exotic animals.

The entire centre boasts a vast floor area of over 93,000 square feet in total, and offers a range of welfare services, including adoption programmes and sterilisation for stray animals.

The SPCA said this new facility allows an extra 1,200 rescue animals to be rehomed per year.

The centre is open every Monday to Sunday from 8:45am to 6:00pm, while adoption services are available daily between 11:00am and 5:30pm.
