The Labour Department on Thursday said it is investigating a fatal work accident, in which a truck driver died after being struck by a bundle of timbers in Ta Kwu Ling.

It said the accident happened on Thursday at around noon at a timber warehouse, where the driver was hit by 160 pieces of timber, weighing 1.7 tonnes.

The driver, 43, suffered head injuries and was certified dead at the scene.

The department said it is identifying the cause of the accident, and will take action if there was any violation of work safety rules.

"We commenced an immediate on-site investigation as soon as we were notified of the accident and issued suspension notices to the proprietor and the employer concerned, suspending the loading or unloading of timbers onto or from the truck," a spokesman said.

It said the proprietor and employer involved could not resume work until the department is satisfied with their measures to decrease the risk to workers.
