Former government chief information officer Allen Yeung said Hong Kong needs to introduce new legislation to tackle the growing threat of cyberattacks.

Organisations such as the Consumer Council, Cyberport and the University of Hong Kong have been dealing with cyberattacks since last year, leading to mounting concerns over cybersecurity and related issues.

Speaking in Beijing, Yeung said it's inevitable that Hong Kong would have more of these cases given so much of work is done online these days.

"It would naturally draw a lot more attention for those cyber criminals to try to profit from those cyberattacks... so I would not imagine that kind of cyberattack would reduce. On the contrary, it would actually increase," he told RTHK.

Yeung added that corporations should install better tools to protect their systems and data, while the government should improve the city’s cybersecurity laws.

"We have some legislation currently, but I think [it is] probably not as up-to-date compared to the ever-increasing pace of technology advancement and also the new way of doing things online, and so, there is a need to look into those outdated laws and bring it up-to-date," he said.

Chief Executive John Lee announced in his Policy Address last year that the government would introduce a bill within this year to enhance cybersecurity.
