The government on Friday announced 14 locations for a trial of its waste charging scheme, which include public and private residential blocks, shopping malls and restaurants.

The trial will start next month and officials will give out free designated garbage bags and tags to demonstrate how the pay-as-you-throw arrangement will work.

Back in January, the government delayed the scheme's full rollout from April until August, saying it wanted to give people more time to understand the policy.

The two public housing blocks selected for the trial are Lin Tsui Estate in Chai Wan and On Ling House in Tsuen Wan's Moon Lok Dai Ha.

Genius Court in Kowloon City, two private blocks in Sham Shui Po that do not have owners corporations or property management companies, as well as two shopping malls – Uptown Plaza in Tai Po and Chelsea Heights Plaza in Tuen Mun – are also picked.

Four restaurants, two care homes in Tuen Mun and the West Kowloon Government Offices are on the list as well.

In a document submitted to the legislature, the Environment and Ecology Bureau said officials will analyse data and collect the views of stakeholders, and will update lawmakers on the trial progress in May or June.
