Hong Kong on Sunday experienced the hottest day in March since record keeping began in 1884.
The observatory said it recorded a temperature of 31.5 degree Celsius at its headquarters at 3pm.
It said a southerly air stream was affecting the coastal areas of Guangdong.
Weather forecasters said the hot weather would remain before temperatures drop slightly on Wednesday.
