Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak on Sunday welcomed all feedback over a new light art installation in East Kowloon which was said to have had a “funeral like” look about it when it was first unveiled.

The initial display featured LED roses outside the East Kowloon Cultural Centre in Ngau Tau Kok. However, the white coloured theme sparked a strong response on social media, with many netizens saying it had a “funeral vibe”.

Some of these white LED roses were later replaced by more colourful ones following the criticism.

Speaking to reporters, Mak explained that the display aligned with last year’s Policy Address, which talked about setting up various photo spots in different districts.

She said the display is still a work-in-progress, adding the government welcomed any feedback to improve the project.

“We think this is also a good thing, because the public actively puts forward opinions in the community, [allowing us to] hear the public's opinions during the construction period,” she said.

“I know that the district councillors, the district officers and staff from the District Youth Community Construction Committee are discussing how to incorporate the public's opinions to make this photo spot more popular.”

When asked about a number of district councillors who hadn’t yet opened their offices almost three months into their term, Mak said she understands that district councillors are expediting the process.

She said she is confident that all 470 district councillors would have their offices opened by the end of March.
