The University of Hong Kong (HKU) on Thursday said it will manage the flow of visitors on its campus starting from May 1, citing an increasing number of tourists.

In a statement, HKU said it aims to preserve a positive environment for teaching and learning, while still welcoming tourists wishing to explore the campus and its history.

One of the measures is to introduce guided tours in phases.

HKU also said arrangements for invited individuals, service providers and community users will remain unchanged.

"HKU is recognised for its enduring and substantial role in fostering community development and partnerships by bridging the gap between town and gown. The University is committed to maintaining an open campus, for members of the public to visit and make best use of its facilities," the statement said.

The university's Pok Fu Lam campus has seen a surge in visitors following recommendations on mainland social media platform Xiaohongshu, and some students have complained that tourists disrupted their studies by taking photos in lecture halls.
