The new head of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), Linda Lam, on Thursday said her priority was to discuss with stakeholders on the organisation’s work against discrimination.

However, Lam said there were no plans to continue with the unfinished work of outlawing intra-racial discrimination because it wasn't as serious as before.

“Because the atmosphere in the community here is a lot better than we encountered a few years ago, so there is no immediate pressing need to resolve the issue, which has basically largely resolved,” she told reporters on her first day in office.

Last week, former EOC chair Ricky Chu, said discrimination against mainlanders had worsened in 2019 and 2020, but that there had been fewer such complaints since then.

Lam, a former government lawyer, added the equality watchdog would continue to address LGBTQ issues within the framework of the city's anti-discrimination ordinances.
