A 60-year-old man has died after apparently trying to save a girl who fell into the sea at Ap Lei Chau.

Police received a report at around 7pm on Thursday that two people had fallen into the sea off South Horizons.

Officers arrived at the scene and got the man and a 16-year-old girl out of the water.

Both were unconscious and were taken to Queen Mary Hospital, where the man was certified dead.

Police said they believe the man had gone into the sea to try to rescue the girl.
