Lukfook Jewellery on Friday said it had hired information technology specialists to investigate a potential data breach, after its database was reportedly hacked with the information of the group's members being put up for sale online.

Local media reported that a hacker had obtained the database, which allegedly contained the information of millions of the chain's members, and was prepared to sell the information for 25,000 Tether tokens, or roughly HK$195,000.

Responding to media queries, the jewellery chain stressed it attached great importance to the privacy of its customers, but it could not confirm at the moment if such information had been leaked.

Lukfook said it has launched a probe into the incident and filed reports to the police and the privacy commissioner's office.

The privacy watchdog, for its part, said it had not received any reports regarding the incident and would reach out to relevant organisations.
