Thousands of spectators on Saturday flocked to the Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade to watch the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races in spite of the heavy rain.

More than 4,000 competitors, representing over 170 teams from 12 countries or regions, are taking part in the two-day sporting event.

A Singaporean rower said he was enjoying the atmosphere.

"It's a new experience for us because we don't normally race out in the sea. I think in Singapore, we normally train in the reservoir, so the water is much calmer. I think it's a totally new experience for us," he added.

"I think it's very great, very lively. I think we do not have such big international competitions back in Singapore."

A mainland tourist, Mr Shao, said the showers hadn't dampened the atmosphere.

"The weather is cool. It is nice to have the dragon boat races here, whether it be from the spectators' or rowers' point of view. Probably because the race venue is close to the city centre, there are many tourists here. I think everyone can feel that Hong Kong is promoting Chinese traditional culture," he added.

The races were organised by the Tourism Board and the Hong Kong, China Dragon Boat Association.

A fireworks display over Victoria Harbour scheduled for 8 pm was cancelled in light of the three Amber Rainstorm Warning Signals issued by the Observatory on Saturday.
