Chief Executive John Lee says airport officials followed their contingency procedures to handle an emergency that closed a runway for hours on Monday, with a plane operator asked to submit a report to the authorities.

Hundreds of flights were delayed after a cargo plane experienced a flat tyre during an emergency landing.

The chief executive on Tuesday said the authorities kept the public informed, made alternative transport and flight arrangements, and brought in extra manpower.

He also said the plane's operator has been told to submit a report on the incident.

"I am a believer that, for any matter, there's always room for improvement. I'm glad that the incident was handled safely. That is the most important principle in any emergency incident, that's the number one priority," he said.

"We will scrutinise reports and see whether any extra action can be taken by the airline, by the [Airport Authority] and other parties concerned."

Lee added that similar incidents could be dealt with more efficiently in the future when the airport's third runway is fully in operation at the end of this year.
