CLP said it received reports of power outage in buildings after a voltage dip in the early hours of Sunday.

The government expressed concern about the incident and told the power firm to submit a report within four weeks.

CLP said at about 3am, a brief voltage dip occurred at its overhead line power supply system connecting Yuen Long and Shenzhen.

The company said while no power interruption was caused by the voltage dip, power supply might have been affected by unstable weather as the thunderstorm warning was in force at the time.

At Fung Chuen Court in Diamond Hill, the security office said a blackout there lasted for more than an hour.

It's not immediately known how many buildings were affected.

In a statement, Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan said the utility company should enhance the capability of its power supply system, particularly the lightning protection capability of 400 kV overhead line towers, as soon as possible to withstand the impact of inclement weather.

Tse also said the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) will follow up with CLP on how to reduce the risk caused by the high frequency of thunderstorm warnings in these few months.

The EMSD has told the firm to identify the cause of the incident and formulate improvement plans.

It's the latest in a series of glitches involving the power firm. Earlier this month, the government said it would ask an independent consultant to investigate CLP power outages over the past three years after more than 2,200 customers in Wong Tai Sin were left without power for about four hours.
