The Consumer Council on Monday advised people to opt for boiled tap water instead of bottled water.

During hot summer days, people tend to lose water more easily, and staying hydrated becomes crucial.

The consumer watchdog tested 30 bottled water brands, including mineral water and distilled water.

The findings revealed that tap water contained a higher mineral content than mineralised purified water and distilled water with added minerals.

The watchdog also discovered that the price of tap water was around 2,700 times lower than that of bottled water, as a litre of tap water costs around $0.00262 while distilled and purified drinking water costs HK$7.02 per litre on average.

Speaking at a press briefing, the council’s chief executive Gilly Wong said tap water is a more eco-friendly and affordable option for consumers, compared to bottled water.

“Obviously our tap water, after you boiled it, it is much more economical, much more friendly, especially from an environmental protection point of view. Every bottle when you produce, you know, you're polluting the environment. Every bottle that you consumed, you are creating harm to the current environment as well as the next generation,” she explained.

The council added that all bottled water it tested passed its safety tests.
