At least eight people have been killed in a fire that swept through a shopping mall in Sichuan province.

75 others were rescued from the blaze in the city of Zigong.

"Eight people have been killed at the moment. The rescue teams are continuing search and rescue," CCTV said.

Footage shown by the broadcaster and shared on social media showed thick black smoke rising from a building in Zigong.

The fire started in the early evening in the shopping centre at the foot of the 14-storey building. CCTV said it was put out by 8.20pm, but rescue efforts were continuing late into the night. (AFP)
