The Observatory said on Saturday that it would issue the Standby Signal No 1 at 10.40pm.

The forecaster said the tropical depression over the central part of the South China Sea remained rather loose, though squally showers were covering central to southern parts of the South China Sea.

The storm is expect to take a northwesterly track towards Hainan Island.

The forecaster said that under the storm's influence, there will be occasional squally showers over the coast of Guangdong in the next couple of days. Winds offshore and on high ground in the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary will pick up gradually later on Sunday.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shores and refrain from engaging in water sports.

Meanwhile Macau's forecaster issued Tropical Cyclone Signal No 1 on Saturday morning, saying it was expected to remain in force for the whole day. The meteorological bureau said it would consider issuing Signal No 3 during the day on Sunday.

Forecasters say another tropical cyclone over the western North Pacific will move towards the seas near Taiwan in the next few days.
