A Hong Kong police officer has died while on holiday in the eastern Thai resort town of Pattaya after he was thrown off a small passenger truck on Monday.

The Immigration Department confirmed that it had received a request for help from the man's family, and pledged to render all possible assistance.

According to local media, the 48-year-old Chinese tourist, surnamed Lam, was found injured in the middle of the road after he was thrown off a songthaew, a popular form of public transport in Thailand.

Photos circulating online showed locals giving first aid to the man, who was eventually pronounced dead in hospital.

The vehicle left the scene, and police have since located the driver who said he was not aware of the accident, according to media reports.

Police later confirmed that the man was a serving officer. The force expressed its deepest condolences and said it would keep in touch with the family to provide all appropriate assistance.
