Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday hosted his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in Guangzhou, with both sides calling for peace amid the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Kuleba said he is seeking common ground in talks with Wang on ending the war.

In a statement, the Ukrainian foreign minister said Kyiv "also wants to follow the path of peace, recovery, and development".

Wang called for the healthy and steady development of ties between China and Ukraine.

He said the two countries established their strategic partnership more than a decade ago, and have treated each other with mutual respect and equality.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the pair exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis.

"Although the conditions and timing are not yet mature, we support all efforts that contribute to peace and are willing to continue to play a constructive role for a ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks," Mao said.

"China has always been firmly committed to promoting a political solution to the crisis," she added.

Kuleba's four-day visit to China, which began on Tuesday, is the first by a Ukrainian foreign minister since the war started in 2022. (Agencies)
