Police say they are investigating a murder, arson and attempted suicide case in Central in which a woman died.
The force said it received multiple reports of fire and smoke coming out of a flat on Kotewall Road at around 1pm on Wednesday.
After forcibly opening the door and putting out the fire, officers found a 57-year-old woman in the living room and her 66-year-old husband in the bathroom. They were taken to hospital where the woman was pronounced dead.
“Initial investigation revealed that the man is suspected of setting the unit on fire in a suicide attempt, which led to the death of his wife who was in the same unit,” the police said in a statement.
“A suicide note and suspected accelerant, which are believed to be related to the case, were seized at scene.”
Police said a post-mortem will be carried out to determine what caused the woman’s death.
Two firemen, meanwhile, felt unwell and were sent to Queen Mary Hospital for treatment.
