China's table tennis star Fan Zhendong on Sunday won gold in the men's singles at the Paris Olympics, beating his Swedish opponent 4-1 in the final.

Fan, who won silver at the Tokyo Games three years ago, fell behind early, with Sweden's Truls Moregard winning the opening game 11-7.

But the second seed from China came roaring back, winning the next four games to clinch victory.

Fan took the second and third games 11-9 and the fourth game 11-8.

In the fifth game, the 27-year-old Fan raced to a big 10-3 lead before Moregard saved five match points to make it 10-8.

Fan secured the next point to win the game and his first Olympics singles title.

He lost to compatriot Ma Long in the final in Tokyo.

This is also China's 17th gold medal at the Paris Games.

"I think I have to believe in my ability and my strengths, to keep myself calm and be able to bring the match to my own pace," Fan said afterwards.

"I did not do too well in the first game, as well as the opening of the second game. But I adjusted my mentality and played better later on."

It was the end of a dream run for Moregard, ranked 26th in the world, who upset the Chinese top seed Wang Chuqin in the round of 32 en route to the final.

Felix Lebrun from France, who was beaten by Fan in the semi-finals, claimed bronze after defeating his Brazilian opponent, Hugo Calderano.
