Kenya's Beatrice Chebet won the gold medal in the women's Olympic 5,000 metres in a time of 14 minutes, 28.56 seconds.

The Netherlands' Sifan Hassan claimed silver and Italian Nadia Battocletti took bronze.

Chebet produced a thrilling sprint finish to claim the first medal for her country at the Paris Olympics.

Two-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon of Kenya had finished second behind her compatriot but was later disqualified for a shove during the closing laps.

In the women's 800 metres final, Britain's Keely Hodgkinson delivered a command performance to win the gold medal and claim her first global title.

"It's something that I've dreamed of so much it hasn't actually sunk in yet," Hodgkinson told reporters.

"The crowd was just absolutely incredible, it felt like a home Olympics for me. It just made the moment super special and I'm super happy," she added.

Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma claimed silver and Kenya's Mary Moraa took bronze.

On the field, the United States won another gold medal as Valarie Allman won the Olympic women's discus.

Feng Bin of China took the silver and Croatia's Sandra Elkasevic claimed bronze.

Meanwhile, Sweden's Mondo Duplantis won the men's Olympic pole vault gold in emphatic fashion, breaking his own world record to set a new mark of 6.25 metres.
