Hong Kong’s Lo Wai-fung was unable to beat the reigning Olympic champion Ulugbek Rashitov of Uzbekistan in the men’s Taekwondo 68kg category at the Paris Olympic Games on Thursday, but will have a chance of a bronze medal care of the repechage.
Top-seeded Rashitov started off strong, beating Lo 12-0 in the first round with a series of kicks and punches. The Uzbek continued his lead into the second round, and while the 17th seeded SAR athlete was able to earn two points for a body kick, Rashitov ultimately came out victorious with a 9-2 win to reach the quarterfinals.
Rashitov went on to make it to the final, granting Lo entry to the repechage competition.
Lo and Liang Yushuai of China, who lost to the Uzbek in the quarterfinals, will fight each other in a repechage.
The winner of the matchup, scheduled for 1.30am on Friday Hong Kong time, will fight another bout for a bronze medal.
Lo is making history as the first teakwondo athlete to represent Hong Kong in the games.
