The Hang Seng Index gained 139.5 points, or 0.8 percent, to open at 17,569.66 points on Monday after hopes for an economic soft landing powered US stocks higher last week.

Encouraging data relieved recession worries following a brutal sell-off earlier this month.

The S&P 500 has rebounded more than 6 percent since August 5, when a steep drop pushed the benchmark US index to its biggest three-day slide in over two years. (with additional reporting by Xinhua and Reuters)
