China will launch an anti-discrimination investigation into Canada's tariff hikes on electric vehicles (EVs) as well as steel and aluminium products imported from China, the Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday.
Beijing will also launch anti-dumping investigations into rapeseed imports and certain Canadian chemical products.
The Commerce Ministry said Ottawa adopted "discriminatory unilateral restrictive measures" targeting Chinese imports, and China will file an appeal to the World Trade Organisation.
Canada announced last week that it will implement a 100 percent surtax on all Chinese-made EVs, effective October 1, and impose a 25 percent surtax on imports of steel and aluminium products from China from October 15.
It followed moves by the United States and the European Union to slap tariffs on Chinese EVs.
Beijing has criticised the imposition of levies on EVs, calling them unfair and protectionist. (Xinhua and agencies)
