The Observatory said on Thursday it will consider issuing a typhoon signal Number Eight between 4pm and 7pm, as super typhoon Yagi edges closer to Hong Kong.

The Number Three strong wind signal has been in force since 6.40pm on Wednesday.

Forecasters said according to the present track, Yagi will skirt around 300 kilometres to the southwest of Hong Kong on Thursday night and Friday morning.

"Gales associated with Yagi are expected to edge closer to the Pearl River Estuary later today. Local winds will strengthen further and weather will deteriorate," the Observatory said in a Thursday morning udate.

"The Observatory will consider issuing the Gale or Storm Signal, No 8 between 4pm and 7pm today."

It added that outer rainbands associated with Yagi are affecting the coast of Guangdong. Seas are rough with swells.

People are adviced to stay away from the shoreline and not engage in water sports, while those engaging in outdoor work or activities should also take note of the changes in weather.

All inbound and outbound flights from Hainan's Haikou airport would be suspended from Thursday at 8pm until Friday midnight, local authorities said, as they closed beaches and coastal tourist attractions.

At least 13 people were killed in the Philippines earlier this week due to Yagi. (Additional reporting by Reuters)
