Sports commissioner Sam Wong has resigned due to personal reasons, after only being in the job for a little more than a year.
The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau announced on Thursday that Wong had "requested for termination of his employment agreement on personal grounds".
He will formally leave the post on September 20.
"[The bureau] would like to thank Mr Wong for his contribution towards promotion of sports policies and sports development of Hong Kong in the past year, and wishes him all the best in his future endeavours and that he would continue to contribute to the sports sector of Hong Kong," it said in a statement.
"[The bureau] will identify Mr Wong's successor according to the established practice."
Wong took up the post in August 2023 for a three-year term with a number of responsibilities, including formulating sports policy, promoting sports in the community, supporting elite sports and promoting Hong Kong as a centre for major international sporting events.
Wong – the husband of Hong Kong's first Olympic gold medallist Lee Lai-shan – had represented the city in major international competitions as a windsurfer, including the Olympic Games and the Asian Games.
A two-time Asian Games silver medallist in 1994 and 1998, he retired in 2000 and became a coach for the SAR's windsurfing team before joining a number of sports associations and institutes.
