The Observatory on Saturday issued the Red Rainstorm Warning as heavy downpours pounded Hong Kong, before downgrading it to amber in the afternoon.

The signal, which took effect at 12.05pm, indicated that heavy rain had fallen or was expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 50 millimetres in an hour, and was likely to continue.

The signal was downgraded at 1.20pm.

"Heavy rain will bring flash floods, and flooding is occurring or is expected to occur in watercourses," the Observatory said.

"People should stay away from watercourses. Residents living in close proximity to rivers should stay alert to weather conditions and should consider evacuation if their homes may become flooded."

The Education Bureau confirmed that classes at all schools would be suspended on Saturday afternoon. Schools which are in session should continue until the end of school hours. They should ensure that conditions are safe before allowing pupils to return home.

The Drainage Services Department urged members of the public to report flooding.
