Lawmakers on a subcommittee focusing on Kowloon East development say they are happy with the construction progress of Kai Tak Sports Park after inspecting the venue on Monday morning.

Bill Tang, who chairs the subcommittee, said the main stadium has been equipped with a good sound system and large LED screens.

He cited operators as saying that 80 percent of shops at the park have been rented out, and they should open during the Christmas season.

But Tang said the transport network around Kai Tak should be improved to cope with mega events such as the Rugby Sevens and the Coldplay concerts to be held next year.

"The first one is to urge MTR to speed up and [add] more MTR service to cope with the audience need. The second is successfully to connect with different kind of bus service, non-franchised bus or KMB to have special bus service within the event," he said.

"Third is try to have water transportation with a big ferry because actually the whole Kai Tak project is a waterfront. The location is quite appropriate to use the water transportation."

The lawmaker added that more efforts are needed to promote restaurants near the sports park and make Kai Tak another central business district like Causeway Bay.
