The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) on Tuesday said flexible volunteering options could encourage more young people to participate in volunteer work.

The federation said that in July it surveyed over 1,000 people aged between 15 and 34.

About 85 percent of the interviewees expressed an interest in volunteering. But almost half who had volunteered in the past said they hadn't offered their time in the last 12 months.

Almost 80 percent said time constraints meant they were unable to join volunteer work.

HKFYG supervisor Christa Cheung said flexible volunteering options would help more young people take part.

"[Young people] believe that volunteering anytime, anywhere would increase their interest, and as they see it as a part of life," she told RTHK.

"In daily life, they can give priority to people in need or ensure the access to inclusive facilities for them. They can support local charities on flag days and learn about their services, or they can also clean up a piece of litter in their neighbourhood or go plastic-free for a day."

Cheung added that providing diversity in volunteering opportunities could keep young people motivated, such as inviting them to volunteer at mega events and offering overseas volunteer opportunities.
