President Xi Jinping and other Communist Party and state leaders on Monday attended a ceremony at Tiananmen Square to present flower baskets to fallen heroes.

The event was held to mark Martyrs' Day, observed one day prior to National Day.

Xi and other leaders, including Premier Li Qiang, National People's Congress Standing Committee chairman Zhao Leji and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference chairman Wang Huning, were joined by representatives from all walks of life at Tiananmen Square.

Veterans and relatives of martyrs were among those in attendance.

As the ceremony started, all of them sang the national anthem, followed by a moment of silence in tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the Chinese people and the development of the People's Republic of China.

The ceremony was presided over by Politburo member and Beijing's party boss Yin Li. (Reporting by Xinhua)
