President Xi Jinping has extended his congratulations to Shigeru Ishiba on his election as Japanese prime minister.

Xi said it's in the fundamental interests of the two peoples for both sides to pursue peaceful co-existence, mutually beneficial cooperation and common development.

Xi expressed hope that Tokyo will work with Beijing in abiding by the principles and consensus established in the four political documents between the two countries, and promoting a strategic relationship of mutual benefit in an all-round way.

Premier Li Qiang also sent congratulations to Ishiba.

China and Japan have established diplomatic relations for more than 50 years, and they have had their differences over territorial disputes, regional security and the discharge of treated water from the disabled Fukushima nuclear plant, among other issues. (Additional reporting by Xinhua)
