Temple tours, weekend markets and art installations were some of the measures proposed by DAB lawmakers on Friday to boost tourism in Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing and Lei Yue Mun.
They said the measures aim to bring tourists to lesser-known areas to support the “tourism everywhere” concept suggested by Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office chief Xia Baolong.
Ben Chan from the party suggested introducing temple tours and transforming Hakka villages in Tsuen Wan into cafes and bookstores.
“In Tsuen Wan, there are lots of temples. These kinds of temples lack facilities and lack tourism resources. We suggest the government should let the tourists enjoy the food in the temples and also buy some souvenirs,” said Chan.
Another DAB lawmaker, Frankie Ngan, thinks Lei Yue Mun should be added to Hong Kong’s water taxi route to make the area more accessible.
Currently, water taxis only cover famous tourist spots such as the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront promenade, the West Kowloon Cultural District and Kai Tak Cruise Terminal.
“Visitors who come to Hong Kong must go to Central and Tsim Sha Tsui. If they have the water taxi or the ferry service, they can go to Lei Yue Mun very fast, maybe 10 to 15 minutes only. Then they can buy their favourite seafood and go to the restaurants to have a very nice dinner or lunch,” Ngan said.
Ngan said he also wants to see festivals, weekend markets, and interactive 3D murals in Lei Yue Mun to attract more visitors.
