The government on Tuesday congratulated actor and singer Anson Kong for winning an award at this year's Busan International Film Festival, calling it a “thrilling accomplishment”.

Kong, a member of the boy band Mirror, who is also known as "AK", won the Rising Star of the Year award under the Asia Contents and Global Over-The-Top Awards on Sunday.

He played a leading role in the TV series Warrior Within 2, an action show about karate produced by ViuTV's affiliate, Makerville.

The acting cultural minister, Raistlin Lau, praised Kong.

"Anson Kong has gained worldwide recognition among his peers in the industry for his acting skills. This is a thrilling accomplishment that showcases the talent of Hong Kong actors," he said in a statement.

Kong spent time as a trainee at a South Korean entertainment company a decade ago, but he had said the plan for him to join a boy band there did not materialise.
