Police say they will close some major roads on Sunday for the Hong Kong Cyclothon.

The race routes will cover thoroughfares including Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, West Kowloon Highway and the Tsing Ma Bridge.

Various roads will be shut in phases from 1am, with some expected to remain closed to traffic until around 3.30pm.

Event organisers say some 6,000 cyclists will take part.

"We'll hold the first Cyclothon Carnival at the West Kowloon Cultural District. To cope with this new carnival, the finishing line will be on the bridge above Jordan Road. Cyclists can go to the carnival right away," Raymond Chan, general manager of event and product development at the Tourism Board told reporters.

Chan also said the 50-kilometre race will feature retired cyclists Lee Wai-sze and Wong Kam-po, while fencer Yeung Chi-ka will join the 32-kilometre race.
