Discounts offered during National Day enticed customers to spend and dine out, catering and retail industry leaders said on Thursday.

They also said their business boomed during the October 1 holiday period, with some reporting a double-digit rise.

Nearly 3,700 restaurants, stores, supermarkets and hotels dished out promotions to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

“In my best dreams, I couldn’t dream that we have this result this year, compared to what we did last year. This is more than I have expected,” said lawmaker Tommy Cheung.

“I haven’t heard any complaints, which is rare. Everybody that went [out to dine] said even though they had a line of 30 minutes, people still thought it’s worth to wait in line.”

He said the trade was planning to roll out similar discounts again.

“We’re aiming to have more other sectors and aiming [for] more outlets, and obviously within these outlets, we’re aiming to have more items where they could do 30 percent off,” Cheung said.

“We are not planning anything other than July 1 and October 1 yet. As we say all along, we are doing this to celebrate July 1 and October 1.”
