President Xi Jinping has urged China and India to strengthen communication and cooperation during talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Brics summit in Kazan, Russia.

The first bilateral meeting in five years between the two leaders on Wednesday came days after the countries reached a deal on their contested border.

Xi said the two sides should resolve conflicts and differences and realise each other's development dreams.

State media also quoted the president as saying China and India should "shoulder international responsibilities, set an example for developing countries to seek strength through unity, and contribute to a multi-polar world and democratisation of international relations".

Modi, for his part, said mutual trust will guide ties with China, welcoming the consensus over the border issue.

"India-China relations are important for the people of our countries, and for regional and global peace and stability," Modi said on X. "Mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity will guide bilateral relations."

Xi and Modi last held formal bilateral talks in October 2019 in the southern Indian town of Mamallapuram.

The president also met other leaders on the sidelines of the Brics summit.

In his meeting with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, Xi said an early ceasefire and ending the war in Gaza are key to easing regional tensions.

And in talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, Xi said Beijing stands ready to work with Cairo to push for an early end to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and ease tensions.

Xi also welcomed Egypt's participation in the Brics summit for the first time as a full member.

World leaders called for peace in the Middle East and Ukraine at the summit meeting.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he welcomed offers to mediate in the Ukraine conflict.

Putin also said the summit's agenda covered the deepening of financial cooperation, including the development of alternatives to Western-dominated payment systems, as well as settling regional conflicts and moving to expand the Bric group of countries. (Agencies)
