The Observatory said it will issue the Standby Signal No 1 between midnight and 3am on Friday as Tropical Cyclone Trami will soon enter within an 800km radius of Hong Kong.
Now west of the Philippines, Trami is moving west towards the vicinity of Hainan Island. From there it is forecast to make a u-turn and linger in the South China Sea until early next week.
The weather agency said combined with an approaching northeast monsoon, it will be windy and cloudy with a few showers over the on Friday and the weekend.
It will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal No 3 on Friday or Saturday.
