President Xi Jinping on Friday met Macau's Chief Executive-elect Sam Hou-fai at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Xi said Sam's high number of nominations and votes in the recent CE election showed he received widespread support from Macau society.

The president added the central government fully endorses and trusts him.

Xi added that Beijing will continue to firmly implement the principles of One Country, Two Systems; Macau people governing Macau; and a high degree of autonomy.

Sam said he was deeply honoured and keenly aware of the responsibility, pledging to fully implement One Country, Two Systems and safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests.

Witnessed by Xi, Sam was presented with an instrument of appointment as the sixth-term CE of Macau by Premier Li Qiang.

He will be sworn in on December 20.

The former Macau top judge won 394 votes from a 400-strong election committee in the CE election on October 13.
