Two people on Sunday were hospitalised, and nine others were injured following accidents at the Sha Tin Cycling Festival, with riders reporting that the path was uneven.

More than 700 people took part in the inaugural event with 11 races held along the Shing Mun River.

The accidents took place in the youth and elite group competitions, involving nine male and two female riders. Most suffered minor injuries, while two needed hospital treatment.

In one of the accidents, a cyclist lost control and crashed into a first aid station, causing other bikers to fall as well, while video footage showed a cyclist in a neck brace.

KT Ng from race organisers Hong Kong Flash Exchange Association said there was not enough time to tidy up.

"There are cars that usually drive on this path on a daily basis. I could see some uneven areas on the road before the race. I contacted the Highways Department during the week to pave the road," he said.

"The road was closed at four in the morning and races started at 6.30am. There wasn't enough time, so some things might have been overlooked during the clean-up."

Retired cyclist and event ambassador, Wong Kam-po, said the roads met specifications.

"It will be better with more experience, because most of the accidents were caused by collisions. Some cyclists might not have good control when it comes to maintaining their position," he said.

"They also might not have sufficient experience or it could be nerves."

Wong added that he hopes to see more competitions take place in Hong Kong.
