Urgent repair work is taking place on a pipe that provides fresh water to Tung Chung, after water supplies were suspended to the area at 10pm on Sunday.
The Water Supplies Department says water supply to the area will gradually resume on Monday morning.
In a statement, the department said the repairs were needed to a 1,200-millimetre-diameter fresh-water pipe following an operational incident near the Siu Ho Wan Water Treatment Works.
A department document said the works is a key facility to supply water to Tung Chung, Hong Kong International Airport, Tai Ho and Discovery Bay.
Officials have cordoned off part of Cheung Tung Road to make the repairs.
The department said it has ordered water trucks and water tanks to the area to provide a temporary supply of fresh water to residents and businesses.
It added that it has contacted the Tung Chung district councillor and care team to offer support to people affected.
One Tung Chung resident surnamed Cheung was heading to the market to buy water. He said he had to rush back home to take a shower before the suspension.
"The water suspension is annoying. I will go to bed earlier. I need to work tomorrow. I have asked my younger sister to boil some water so we have water to drink," he said.
The Hospital Authority has said the operation of North Lantau Hospital in Tung Chung will not be affected.
