Reactions from around the world began flooding in on Wednesday as Donald Trump claimed victory in the US presidential election.

NATO chief Mark Rutte congratulated the Republican, saying his return to power will help keep the alliance "strong".

"His leadership will again be key to keeping our Alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength through NATO," Rutte said in a statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Trump’s apparent victory "history's greatest comeback" and a new beginning in the US-Israel alliance.

"Congratulations on history's greatest comeback! Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge victory!" said Netanyahu in a statement issued by his office.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also hailed Trump’s “historic election victory.”

“I look forward to working with you in the years ahead. As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise."

In a post on social media platform X, French President Emmanuel Macron said he’s “ready to work together just as we knew how to do during four years. With your convictions and with mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity", Macron wrote.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Trump on an “impressive” election victory, and said he hopes the result will bring “just peace in Ukraine closer.”

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, meanwhile, had this assessment of Trump on his official Telegram account.

“Trump has one useful quality for us: as a businessman to the core, he mortally dislikes spending money on various hangers–on and stupid hanger-on allies, on bad charity projects and on voracious international organisations".

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sent his congratulations, saying he was looking forward to working with the vote frontrunner.

"Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory," Modi wrote on X. "As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration." (Agencies)
