The Observatory issued the Standby Signal No. 1 at 12.40pm today as Tropical Cyclone Yinxing edges closer to the coast of southern China.
It said the T1 signal is expected to remain in place until at least noon on Saturday.
"Depending on the distance between Yinxing and the Pearl River Estuary, intensity of Yinxing and the local wind conditions, the Observatory will then assess the need for issuance of the Strong Wind Signal No. 3," the forecaster said.
"A tropical cyclone warning signal is expected to remain in force at least until Sunday morning."
It added that under the combined effect of Yinxing and the northeast monsoon, it will be windier over the coast of Guangdong and on high ground over the weekend.
Seas will be rough with swells and there will be showers, the observatory said.
