A worker on Saturday died in an industrial accident at a construction site near Tai Wai MTR Station.
Police said they received a call about the incident around 1:30 pm.
Initial investigation found that the man was crushed by a cage lift while trying to move items.
The worker fell unconscious and was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A representative of a concern group said it's believed that the deceased worker was grabbing materials out of the cage lift, when the lift suddenly moved and crushed him.
Siu Sin-man of the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims said there have been similar incidents in the past, but isn’t sure if this accident was due to human error or a mechanical malfunction.
"I know that after the last similar accident, many construction sites improved worker protection by adding extra safety design features to the cage lifts, making operational faults less likely. But I'm not sure if this particular cage lift at this site has any issues."
Contractor Hip Seng Construction was in charge of The Pavilia Farm construction site where the accident took place. Its spokesman said the company was deeply saddened by the accident, and expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.
The company will work with the sub-contractor to assist his family, and cooperate with the government to look into the cause of the accident.
The Labour Department said it has deployed staff to the scene and is investigating.
Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Institute of Safety Practitioner urged construction sites to inspect their lifts' steel cables at least once per week and to install a safety device that can prevent lifts from falling even if the cables break.
The institute added that such lifts should never be used to carry workers and should be locked down once the doors are open.
