An international rugby match will be held on Saturday as part of trial events to test the new Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground.

The match from 4pm between Hong Kong and Brazil is the second test event at the 5,000-seat venue, following a local football league game there last month.

Sports Commissioner George Tsoi said more than 3,000 spectators are expected to attend the match – double the number at the football game.

"So we will be progressively increasing the intensity as well as the scale of our test events in the different venues within the Kai Tak Sports Park," Tsoi said.

"We will increase the number of participants each time."

Tsoi added that authorities will make direction signs larger and install more gates with metal detectors at the venue.

The commissioner also said the government plans to hold a trial event for an indoor venue at the park next month, and another in the 50,000-seat main stadium in January.

James Farndon, the CEO of Hong Kong China Rugby, said Saturday's match will be more than just a trial run.

"It also gives us a prime opportunity to build on our collaboration with all the local government stakeholders that we've been working with in recent months," he said.

"From a Hong Kong China Rugby perspective, we get the opportunity to really utilise the event as a means to learn and test our event operations as we move towards the big event in March."

The Hong Kong Rugby Sevens will take place at Kai Tak Sports Park from 28-30 March.
