Macau’s outgoing Chief Executive, Ho Iat-seng, on Tuesday said he’s basically accomplished all of the promises set out in his election manifesto five years ago, adding that the gaming hub has made great strides in many areas.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since his announcement not to seek re-election, Ho said his administration had to overcome many challenges during his five-year tenure – including the Covid pandemic that lasted three years.

Nevertheless, he said Macau's economy expanded and measures were also put in place to better safeguard national security.

He said the stress and a prolonged lack of rest over the years had taken a toll on his health, and he believes it's now time to pass the baton.

Ho also confirmed that the Macau government will continue to dish out MOP 10,000 to permanent residents and MOP 6,000 to non-permanent residents next year, saying his successor, Sam Hou-fai, agrees with the move.

Separately, the outgoing Macau CE noted that he hopes Macau and Hong Kong can continue to work closely together.

He said Macau has always been learning from Hong Kong, saying the city has made substantial progress in areas like finance, maritime and aviation.

Asked about Hong Kong's development as a mega events hub, Ho said people should not see the two SARs as rivals.

"Both Hong Kong and Macau has the vibe for mega events. We are developing this together... We invite different international singers to perform, and both places have the vibe to host concerts," he said.

"The next term of the Macau government should also work closely with Hong Kong because the relationship between the two places is very good."

Ho's successor, former Macau top judge Sam Hou-fai, is due to take office on December 20.
