Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen said China is ready to engage in dialogue and manage differences with the United States to promote steady and sustained development of bilateral economic ties.
Wang, who's also the China International Trade Representative, told a press conference on Friday that the world's two-largest economies are highly complementary as he emphasised the importance of their relations.
Responding to a reporter's question about US President-elect Donald Trump's plan to impose 60 percent tariffs on imports from China, he said that would "not solve the country’s own trade deficit problem”.
"Instead, it leads to higher prices for imported products and inflation, with the burden ultimately falling on consumers," Wang added.
He noted that China's total foreign trade including imports and exports reached 36 trillion yuan in January-October, up about 5 percent from the same period of 2023.
During Friday's press conference, Wang and other officials outlined ways that China is promoting expanding trade and support for coping with climate change.
Such measures include streamlining customs and visa requirements.
China allows visa-free travel for citizens of 29 countries, including France and Germany, and the number of foreign visitors, which plunged during the pandemic, has jumped this year. (Xinhua/AP)
