The Sai Kung District Office on Sunday said a laptop and a mobile phone belonging to one of its care teams have been stolen. The office says the devices contain the personal data of hundreds of people.
In a statement, the Sai Kung District Office said it received the theft report from the Sai Kung Hang Hau East Sub-district Care Team on Saturday. It said the laptop and the mobile phone contain the names and phone numbers of hundreds of people, some with addresses and ID card numbers.
The district office said the items, used by the Hang Hau District Festival and Special Event Preparatory Committee, had been in a locked room at the Hang Hau Rural Committee office on Hang Hau Road. It said the door lock had been broken.
The office said both electronic devices and files were protected by high-strength passwords, so the risk of data leakage should be relatively low.
The office has reported the case to the police and the privacy watchdog.
Police have classified the case as burglary.
